Taiwan Airport Service Fee Increases to NT$750 Starting September
[TAIPEI] In accordance with the revised Regulations Governing Collection and Operation of Airport Service Charges for Departing Airline Passengers, a series of new regulations affecting outbound travel costs officially take effect today. Notably, the outbound passenger airport service fee has been increased from the previous NT$500 to NT$750, representing a 50% adjustment. Additionally, several airlines have implemented minor updates regarding baggage allowances and booking policies, prompting reminders for travelers with upcoming international itineraries to review potential cost adjustments.
Fee Adjustment Structure and Applicability
Authorities stated that the airport service fee adjustment is being implemented in two phases. The first phase runs from September 1, 2026, through August 31, 2028, during which the fee per departing passenger is set at NT$750. The second phase is scheduled to raise the fee to NT$1,000 starting September 1, 2028. This fee is typically collected by airlines bundled directly into the total ticket price.
Regarding whether passengers who have already purchased tickets are required to pay the price difference, regulatory bodies and airlines note that applicability depends on the ticket issuance date and whether the fare includes the service charge. In cases where passengers hold special tickets excluding the airport service fee or require refunds, regulations explicitly allow for full refunds without any administrative fees charged by airlines. Statutorily exempt passengers remain unaffected.
Key Reminders for Outbound Travelers:
Increased Fees: Tickets purchased or flights departing on or after September 1 are subject to the NT$750 airport service fee.
Baggage & Booking Guidelines: Major airlines have recently reviewed and optimized checked baggage weight limits, excess baggage rates, and booking terms. Travelers are advised to check official airline websites prior to departure.
Travel Budgeting: While post-summer represents a traditional shoulder season, travelers should factor these regulatory and operational updates into their overall travel budget.
Airport Infrastructure Upgrades and Future Outlook
Officials noted that the increased revenue generated from the service fee adjustment will be fully allocated toward airport terminal upgrades, optimized automated clearance facilities, and enhanced ground handling services, thereby strengthening Taiwan’s competitiveness as an Asia-Pacific transit hub and delivering a safer, more efficient airport experience.
